English has become a global language. The world has adopted it as a medium of communication. In the present world of globalization and multinational capitalization everybody must necessarily acquire English language skill. However, the language itself produces anxiety and phobia among rural learners who find it difficult to master. The picture has become grimmer with the introduction of NEP-2020 which drastically reduces the importance of English language and makes a mere subject like any other subject of humanities. Though the English courses in NEP-2020 do have potential to develop the language skill, the removal of its compulsory status give a comfort to students who do not want English as a subject. Provided choices make it easy to get a graduation degree without English. But then the question arises of what will be the value of such a degree? The workshop by Ms Sanjana Rai from Rai Academy Nagpur touches upon similar such issues with students. Her way of informal interaction with students made them excited about immense possibilities with English skill. As our department is coping with NEP-2020 trouble, the academic needs of students who want to survive in the globalization produce worry for us as teachers of English. Let us hope the workshop by Ms Rai will help us in future to motivate more students to understand the importance of English language in modern world.
